From its home in Birmingham, Ex Cathedra has established an international reputation as a leading UK choir and Early Music ensemble. Under founder and Artistic Director, Jeffrey Skidmore, Ex Cathedra is known for its vibrant performances and a passion for seeking out not only the best but the unfamiliar and the unexpected in the choral repertoire. Since its formation in 1969, Ex Cathedra has grown into a unique musical resource, comprising specialist choir, vocal consort of ten voices, period-instrument orchestra and thriving education programme. Recent years have seen a major increase in Ex Cathedra’s national and international reputation thanks to its trail-blazing performances of Early Music – in particular the French and Latin American Baroque – and its role as a leading exponent of choral training and vocal skills education. Ex Cathedra presents its own subscription season of concerts – which spans music from the fifteenth to twenty-first centuries – in the West Midlands and London, and appears at festivals and concert series across the UK and Europe. Details of all future performances can be found in our concert diary. Ex Cathedra has made a dozen critically acclaimed recordings for Hyperion and ASV, and on its own label. More details are available on our Ex Cathedra recordings page. Ex Cathedra is an Associate Artist at Town Hall, Birmingham. Ex Cathedra Consort is the culmination of our commitment to education. Comprising ten to twelve professional singers – who feature regularly as soloists with Ex Cathedra – it seeks to provide opportunities at the highest level for the best emerging talent, many of whom have come through our academy system. The Consort has performed at festivals across the UK and abroad, and appears regularly at Dartington International Summer School, both giving concerts during the week and acting as tutors on the Vocal Chamber Music course. In 2004 the Consort made its debut recording, of motets by Jacobean composer Martin Peerson. The group also featured prominently on Ex Cathedra’s first two CDs of Baroque Music from Latin America: New World Symphonies and Moon, Sun and All Things - both best-sellers. In 2007 Consort recorded Fire Burning in Snow: Baroque Music from Latin America 3, forthcoming on Hyperion. Ex Cathedra's Baroque Orchestra was founded as part of Ex Cathedra's 1983-1984 season and made its début with a performance of Bach Mass in B Minor. It was the first period instrument orchestra to be established in an English regional city. The orchestra is a flexible ensemble combining many of Europe's top period instrumentalists with talented young players. Ex Cathedra's commitment to developing young players is an extension of our approach to the development of young singers. Principals from the orchestra regularly give master classes and coach students at Birmingham Conservatoire; a number of our current players have benefited from this system. |
