Ex Cathedra has given many concerts in beautiful places in this country and abroad, but the heart of our work remains here in Birmingham and the surrounding region.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our 38th season which in many ways this year is a celebration of Birmingham with its impressive range of remarkable venues: the Oratory, St Paul’s, Birmingham Cathedral, the Hippodrome, Symphony Hall and the newly restored Town Hall.

In the mysterious and magical atmosphere of the Oratory we perform Buxtehude’s ecstatic meditation Membra Jesu nostri, a glorious programme of Venetian Sacred Symphonies, and exquisite French Baroque music by Henry Du Mont in Parisian Vespers. The now traditional four concerts of Christmas Music by Candlelight take place in St Paul’s, the historic industrialists’ church in the Jewellery Quarter. Our Youth Choirs perform Lucia, the Swedish celebration of Light, in St Philip’s, Birmingham’s unique Baroque Cathedral, and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker in the Hippodrome with Birmingham Royal Ballet. Ex Cathedra’s Education Showcase will take place in Symphony Hall.

And we have the Town Hall back! The reopening of this historically and emotionally signifi cant venue is such an exciting prospect and, as Associate Artists, we celebrate with four contrasting programmes which fully explore this beautifully renovated, world- class concert hall. Spirit of the Age is a choral celebration of Birmingham’s musical heritage, past, present and future. Sing Noel! is a European ‘Grand Tour’ of Baroque Christmas music, and American Dreams explores 20th century choral masterpieces from the USA. Bach’s dramatic St John Passion completes the quartet of concerts.

All our programmes are carefully researched and prepared by a dedicated team of musicians, linguists, musicologists and theologians and we are passionate about sharing our love of choral music with our audiences. If you are part of our regular audience you will know that these concerts are not to be missed. If you are new to Ex Cathedra then come and join our celebrations! You’ll be made very welcome.
